At, we are always concerned with keeping the feet and ankles healthy. If they aren’t, then the person will not be healthy. The feet provide the platform for a healthy kinetic chain (the parts of the body responsible for movement).

Many foot and ankle problems are related to immobility of the big toe, plantar fascia, and calf muscles. These problems can cause significant disruptions in the kinetic chain leading to pain.

There are several common foot and ankle problems that can affect the entire body. They can be seen below:

Hallux Rigidus – Arthritis and lack of 60 degrees of dorsiflexion of the big toe
Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation and tearing of the connective tissue at the bottom of the feet (caused by tight calves). Reduces ankle dorsiflexion.
Tight Calves – Reduction of ankle dorsiflexion
Reduced Plantar Flexion – Causes problems with toe push-off when walking

One of our favorite exercises that can promote healthy feet and ankles is the yoga Sun Salutation, specifically the Sun Salutation A. This exercise mobilizes the toes, stretches the feet, stretches the calves (which provides a dorsiflexion stretch) and even stretches plantar flexion. In addition, the Sun Salutation provides benefit to the hamstrings, back, and shoulders.
